What can you do to stop the madness?

A lot! Just for starters:

Read the books they’re banning. And while you’re at it, support independent booksellers and public libraries.

Speak out at school board meetings & defend our right to read freely. California has more protections than most states, but “soft bans” are still common, where conservative parents make such a fuss about “controversial” titles that teachers no long assign them and librarians don’t recommend them. This is something you can stop from happening at your kids’ school.

Vote for candidates who support free speech & intellectual freedom. And encourage friends and relatives in other areas to do the same.

Join us and help spread the word. Marin residents are always flabbergasted to learn how deeply books bans are becoming entrenched in American law and culture. We raise awareness at community events such as San Anselmo’s summer block party Live on the Avenue and the national Banned Books Week activities October 4-10. Occasionally we do postcarding and other actions. We meet monthly for Outlaw Bookworms, Marin’s only book club devoted exclusively to banned books. Want to know more?
