The Marin Banned Books Week Committee encourages bookstores, other local businesses, schools, libraries, civic leaders, and the general public to participate in national Banned Books Week, which in 2026 falls on October 4 – 10. This annual event raises awareness of the sharp spike in censorship occurring in America and proposes actions to oppose it both locally and nationally.
HOW FAST IS BOOK BANNING SPREADING?
Nationally, there have been 22,810 instances of book banning since 2021, and the scope is expanding from schools to public libraries and entire states. This is frightening, unAmerican, and deeply unfair to the next generation of kids. We don’t want them growing up reading nothing but government-approved texts, corporate propaganda, and online instructions for letting AI do their thinking for them.
COMMUNITY ACTIONS
In addition to spending Banned Books Week rallying support for our intellectual freedom, we organize various community activities such as postcard writing at Book Passage and a booth at San Anselmo’s Live on the Avenue.

Right now we are giving away free 12 x 18″ posters (while supplies last) that you can place in shop windows, carry in protests, post at your favorite coffee house, or display with pride in your driveway. To get one, stop by our booth at Live on the Avenue (we’re there Friday, August 21 and Saturday, September 12 from 5:30 to sunset, by Imagination Park on San Anselmo Avenue). You can also pick one up at The Copy Shop, 901 C Street, San Rafael, weekdays 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
